Athina Rachel Tsangari’s adaptation of Jim Crace’s novel transports viewers to a remote English village on the brink of change. Walter Thirsk (Caleb Landry Jones), a farmer caught between loyalty and self-preservation, watches as the arrival of Edmund Jordan (Frank Dillane) disrupts the fragile balance of rural life with promises of modernisation. When a barn fire sparks fear and suspicion, three outsiders, including Mistress Beldam (Thalissa Teixeira), become scapegoats for the village’s anxieties.
Blending pastoral beauty with stark brutality, Harvest examines themes of displacement, xenophobia, and the erosion of tradition. Sean Price Williams’ 16mm cinematography, shot in natural light, heightens the film’s immersive, haunting atmosphere, making history feel eerily contemporary.
Athina Rachel Tsangari is a Greek filmmaker whose work represents one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary European cinema. Her first feature film, The Slow Business of Going (2000), was experimental, while Attenberg (2010) and Chevalier (2015) have brought her wider acclaim. Like his Greek contemporaries, his films often explore human behaviour within closed communities, adapting an ironic and socially critical perspective. As a producer, he has worked on several Yorgos Lanthimos films, including Dogtooth (2009) and Alps (2011).
Harvest (2024) is an adaptation of Jim Crace's 2013 novel set in a medieval English village. Tsangari's most ambitious work to date explores the collision of modernisation and tradition, while unpacking the dynamics of power and vulnerability through composition and rhythmic shifts.
